Making Language Visible

Autumn 2019: Typography I with Keith Novicki

For the entirety of the semester, I explored the old-style font, Caslon. Students learned the basics of typography: typefaces, point sizes, line lengths, line-spacing, and letter-spacing, kerning, counter-form, letter detail, etc.

With the attention on a very minute detail of a letterform, I came to realize how important the use of type is in telling a story. With the old-style font, Caslon, I composed layouts that demonstrated exciting modern compositions paired with the traditional form this font possesses.
